About The Temple

The Kamakhya Temple is among the 51 Shakti Peethas and a major tantric hub founded in the 8th–9th century, rebuilt over centuries up to the 17th.

Perched on Nilachal Hill, it houses the goddess in the form of a yoni-shaped rock fissure over a spring—not an idol.

Its powerful tantric energy draws sadhus, scholars, and pilgrims seeking fertility, empowerment, and spiritual awakening, especially during events like Ambubachi.

One of the oldest Shakti Pithas where Sati’s yoni fell. The temple is central to tantric Shakti worship, especially during Ambubachi Mela—a fertility festival in mid‑June—when it remains closed for three days and reopens after purification rituals.
