Origin & Mythology
Maa Tara is the goddess who saved Lord Shiva when he drank the Halahala poison during the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan). She took the form of a mother and fed him milk to soothe the burning poison in his throat, hence her name 'Tara', meaning 'the one who saves'. She is deeply revered in both Hinduism and Vajrayana Buddhism.
Divine Iconography
Similar to Kali, Tara is dark blue and stands on a corpse (Shiva). However, she is pot-bellied, wears a tiger skin, and carries a lotus and scissors in her hands. The scissors represent her ability to cut worldly attachments.
