Who is Maa Kali?
The first Mahavidya, representing the raw, untamed power of time that devours everything. She destroys ego and grants ultimate liberation (Moksha).
Origin & Mythology
Maa Kali manifested from the brow of Goddess Durga to defeat the demons Chanda and Munda, and later Raktabeeja. She represents the absolute, formless void before creation and after destruction. Her terrifying form is a compassionate one for her devotees, as she slays their inner demons of ego, lust, and greed.
Divine Iconography
Kali is depicted with dark blue or black skin, completely naked (clad in space), wearing a garland of 50 demon heads (representing the Sanskrit alphabet) and a skirt of severed arms (karma). She stands on the chest of Lord Shiva, showing that Nature (Prakriti) dominates over Consciousness (Purusha) when it is static.
